Things looking up for Kendall, puppy that showed signs of illness

When it comes to “Kendall,” the friendly puppy that showed symptoms of Kennel Cough, things are definitely looking up.

Staff at Southpointe Veterinary Hospital in Allen Park announced today that Kendall is much improved. The dog is eating and drinking, and is even described as “hyper.” Kendall had shown some improvement late last week, and the puppy’s health really progressed over the weekend. Southpointe also confirmed that medical tests on the puppy were negative, which clears the way for further improvement and, hopefully, a full recovery.

Kendall will remain at the Southpointe Veterinary Hospital under the direct care of staff, until fully recovered.

The City of Taylor’s Animal Shelter originally adopted out the puppy before reaccepting it when its new owner soon noticed signs of the cough and other signs of lethargy. Kennel cough (also known as canine infectious tracheobronchitis) is an upper respiratory infection affecting dogs. Viral and bacterial causes of canine cough are spread through airborne droplets produced by sneezing and coughing.

Other animals at the shelter are reported in fine condition. The shelter remains closed until March 21 for a deep cleaning and other internal modifications.

Given the widespread concern from the community, persons inquiring on how to make a donation for Kendall’s medical care and expenses should send their donation directly (checks or money orders only, payable to the “Taylor Animal Shelter”) to Southpointe Veterinary Hospital, 10581 Allen Road, Allen Park, MI, 48101. Please note “Kendall Care” on the check. The clinic is keeping a file on the puppy.

While everyone’s concern is appreciated, officials ask that you DO NOT CALL Southpointe for updates. Monitor the City of Taylor’s social media sites and official website for updates.
