Marriott Hotels are in Taylor’s future – namely new Fairfield Inn and TownPlace Suites on the location of the former Ramada Inn on Eureka Road, east of I-75. The proposal was OK’d by the Planning Commission during a recent meeting.
The plans call for two, four-story hotels within the same site. The Fairfield Inn will have 100 rooms; the TownPlace Suites will have 116.
“For a long period of time, Taylor had only one hotel complex, which is odd for a large City like ours that is so ideally located near the airport and major freeways heading into Detroit,” Mayor Rick Sollars said. “Marriott has been in play for quite some time, whether it was in the old Ramada location or on the Taylor Tool site across Eureka.
“This type of development is great for our community, and continues to build up the area around I-75 and Eureka Road,” he continued. “We look forward to more and more great national brands locating in our City.”
The Fairfield Inn & TownPlace Suites are two of a dozen hotel versions that Marriott offers. The Fairfield Inn series is included in its “select service” category. According to Marriott, the brand emphasizes “comfortable, affordable and reliable business hotels providing everything travelers needs to work productively, maximize down time, eat well and sleep soundly.”
Courtyard by Marriott and SpringHill Suites by Marriott are two other brands that fall into that “select service” class.
The TownPlace Suites line is part of an “extended stay” series, built for the traveler who appreciates value in a relaxed and productive environment. These properties feature modern spacious suites with full kitchens, free WiFi and breakfast.
Others that fall into that same class are Residence Inn and Marriott Executive Apartments.
Other classes offered by Marriott include luxury (i.e. Ritz-Carlton); lifestyle collection (Renaissance Hotels); signature (Marriott Hotels & Resorts); and destination entertainment (Gaylord Hotels).
The Ramada Inn complex was torn down in 2015 when a new developer acquired the site. It had been a vacant eyesore for more than five years before the then-new Sollars Administration focused on cleaning up and developing the property. Plans for a hotel, or more than one hotel, had surfaced from time to time. The developer owned both the old Ramada site and the former Taylor Tool location on the northern side of Eureka Road.
A new strip mall was eventually built on the abandoned Taylor Tool location and is anchored by La-Z-Boy. Tropical Smoothies and Detroit Wing Co. are also in that center, which is directly across from Trader’s Pointe.
For a lengthy period of time, Taylor featured only a single hotel location, Comfort Inn & Suites on Telegraph Road north of I-94. But soon it will have three – Hilton is also building a Home 2 Suites location on Pardee Road, across from Southland Center and Target.
