Longtime resident honored with plaque, proclamation

DAVID WALKER SR

When David Walker Sr. passed away last year at age 98, the City of Taylor lost a familiar face and a good friend.

Mr. Walker was a regular at City Council meetings, and always sat in the same chair. City Council honored Mr. Walker’s memory by dedicating his former seat to him at the Tuesday, August 6, meeting with a proclamation. Several of his relatives attended, as did Wayne County Commissioner Ray Basham.

The proclamation honoring him reads:

Whereas, David Walker Sr. was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 21, 1919, then moved to Detroit, MI. After graduating from Cass High School, Mr. Walker joined the Naval Reserve. Shortly after he joined Coast Guard, following boot camp he attended Radioman school soon became Radioman 1st Class,

Whereas, Mr. Walker’s military awards include Presidential Unit Commendations, the Navy Combat Ribbon, Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal and Coast Guard Sea Service,

Whereas, He spent significant time volunteering at local food pantries and other organizations and spent countless time pursuing his passion of communications as a HAM radio operator. Mr. Walker attended every council meeting in City of Taylor and sat in the same seat for every meeting.

Now, therefore be it Proclaimed that, the Taylor City Council, together with all the elected officials of the City of Taylor, would like to honor Mr. David Walker Sr. by adding a plaque with his name dedicating the seat that he sat in for many years.
